NCAT: Asphalt Mix Design (Superpave)

This 4.5-day workshop is designed to give engineers, testing personnel, and inspectors a basic understanding of the asphalt mix design process. Attendees will review material specifications, test procedures, and general mix design requirements for Superpave or Marshall volumetric mix designs, with hands-on training using standard procedures and criteria. The focus will primarily be on Superpave. This course includes NCAT certification or mix designer certification for the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Program Content

The course features lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on training using Superpave and Marshall methods. It is split between classroom lectures (2.5 days) and lab work (2 days). Topics include:

  • Overview of asphalt mix design methods
  • Superpave binder testing and specification
  • Aggregate properties and testing
  • Volumetric analysis and mix design
  • Moisture susceptibility and performance testing
  • Binder and aggregate lab tests
  • Mix design using Superpave gyratory compactor
  • Rutting resistance using APA and Hamburg Wheel Tracker

Exam and Certification

An exam will be given on the last day. A minimum score of 75% is required to receive certification.

Materials

Each participant will receive a workbook and a copy of the Asphalt Institute’s Asphalt Mix Design Methods (MS-2) manual.

Fees, Refunds, & Deadline

The $1,650 registration fee includes training, materials, and breaks. Participants are responsible for housing, meals, and transportation. Fees must be paid at registration. Registration closes two weeks before the course or when full. Cancellations two weeks prior receive a full refund. No refunds after that date, but substitutions are accepted.

Eligibility

Open to anyone seeking more information about asphalt mix design. Some prior experience is recommended but not required.

This course provides 36 Professional Development Hours.

Location

The course takes place at NCAT’s research facility at 277 Technology Parkway in Auburn, Alabama. Hotels are nearby.
